Neighborhood Parents Network started in 1980 as a volunteer-run organization. Today, our Executive Director, a team of part-time directors and managers, and a group of amazing volunteers continue the work of supporting Chicago families. Volunteer Title Junior Board Member This is a volunteer position requiring 5 - 10 hours per month. We ask for a commitment of at least one year. Organization Founded in 1980, the Neighborhood Parents Network of Chicago, (NPN), is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our mission is to connect a diverse community of families with the support and resources designed to solve the challenges of parenting in Chicago. Purpose of the Junior Board NPN is seeking candidates for our first Junior Board. This opportunity is an especially good fit for individuals interested in leadership opportunities, grant writing, fundraising, project management, and/or the non-profit industry. Anyone who is interested is encouraged to apply. Come join a supportive, hard-working team dedicated to bringing resources to Chicago families. Junior Board Members will guide NPN in its mission and goals by leading grant application efforts, managing the online auction, engaging in board meetings with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, building relationships within the Chicago business, non-profit, educational, and parent community, and participating in NPN’s events, programs, and fundraisers. Desired Qualifications Not all applicants will have skills that match this description exactly. NPN values diverse experiences and encourages everyone who meets the required qualifications to apply. While having “desired” qualifications make for a strong candidate, we encourage applicants with alternative experiences to apply. We always look for people who will bring something new to the table! ● Interested in leading development initiatives ● Experience in grant writing or a willingness to learn ● Experience in managing an online auction, or a willingness to learn ● Organized, able to work both independently and as part of a team ● Comfortable introducing themselves to business owners, non-profit professionals, school leaders, and parents in order to build relationships and request donations of time and money to support NPN’s mission ● Able and willing to attend at least one NPN event each month (in-person or virtual) (1-2 hour time commitment each month) ● Bilingual (Spanish/English) ● Internally motivated to celebrate and support all types of Chicago families including but not limited to families with one parent, families of children with developmental differences, new parents, experienced parents, LGBTQIA+ parents and children, and families across all income brackets, races, and religions. Duties and Responsibilities In lieu of a financial contribution, we ask junior board members for the following: ● Lead at least one aspect of NPN’s online auction or grant writing process or both ● Secure a minimum of 5 auction items with a minimum value of $50 each ● Attend at least one virtual or in-person NPN event each month ● Follow NPN on social media and share posts regularly Required Qualifications Strong interpersonal skills. Bachelor's Degree preferred. Ability to devote 5-10 hours of work to NPN each month. Ability to attend all Junior Board meetings and some meetings of the Board of Directors. Volunteer Title Internship: Auction Coordinator This is a part-time internship position requiring a minimum of 10 hours per week. The position can start as early as 8/21/23 and ends 4/1/24. Our mission is to connect a diverse community of families with the support and resources designed to solve the challenges of parenting in Chicago. The Auction Coordinator intern will assist in securing items from local businesses by identifying businesses to solicit, coordinating volunteers, soliciting items, and corresponding with donors over email and phone. Children should be given the opportunity to learn free from discrimination and feel comfortable expressing their identities within their classroom and school community. Volunteer Title Online Auction Volunteer Highlights ● 24 Volunteers needed between August 2023 and February 2024 ● Time commitment of only five hours over two months ● Visit businesses in a 2-3 block walk to ask for donations and follow up by phone and email ● Pick your blocks from the list below Why We Need You Online Auction volunteers raise money for NPN by visiting neighborhood businesses and asking for donations for our online auction. A small staff team of only 5 part-time employees, NPN relies on the support of member volunteers to keep going! All money raised through the online auction goes toward programming and resources for Chicago families. What You Will Do ● Visit businesses in the assigned 2-3 blocks to ask for donations to NPN’s online auction. NPN will provide volunteers with supporting material (business cards, flyers, etc.) to support your request. Choose your blocks from the list below! ● Follow up with businesses over the phone or email as needed ● Keep a designated NPN staff member updated on your progress Note: We ask for donations of digital gift cards, so pick-up of physical items will be minimal. In combination with theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and compassion, Reena uses a strengths-based, reflective approach to coach and empower educators and parents. She offers concrete strategies, tools, and manageable action plans to support adults who interact directly with children. Coordinate and execute live in-person sessions with expert speakers and panelists to educate members on school search and developmental differences. This includes helping to identify topics, identifying potential speakers, and working with speakers to prepare. Build relationships with family-focused businesses and organizations in South Loop, Chinatown, Bronzeville, Kenwood, Hyde Park, Humboldt Park, Little Village, and Pilsen to increase member benefits and NPN’s reach. This will require traveling to and within those neighborhoods. Attend and contribute to staff meetings and help in other capacities as needed Required Qualifications Strong writing skills and interpersonal skills. Bachelor's Degree preferred. Ability to work special events on evenings and weekends approximately 6 times per year. Ability to travel throughout the city of Chicago as needed. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Microsoft Word, Excel Google Workspace Work Environment All NPN staff work from home. We do not have an office. We have an in-person event at least once a month at various venues throughout the city. Work hours are flexible. However, core work hours are 9am - 3pm Monday through Friday. We ask all staff to be available to schedule phone calls and meetings within that time frame. Most meetings and calls are scheduled in advance. All staff occasionally need to work weekend or evening hours. The program manager will be responsible for the weekend NPN playdates and other evening and weekend programming. Most often this means working the event. Sometimes it means ensuring that another staff member is confirmed to work and has all of the information needed. We are professional, scrappy, and hardworking. We believe in the value of NPN. Time Commitment The program coordinator is a part-time, hourly, contract position requiring 10 - 20 hours per week.
