Why I love being a mom in: Beverly
Written by: Meredith Carey
“Where is that”? “Is that a suburb”? These are often questions I get asked when I tell my fellow Chicagoans that I live in Beverly. I was actually born and raised here, as were many generations of my husband’s and my family. We can trace back over 3 generations of our ancestors who have called the Beverly/Morgan Park neighborhood “home”. This is truly one reason that this area is so unique. You will find many families like my own. My grandmother has been living in her house for over 65 years..
My husband and I bought our house from a family that raised 6 kids in the 50s, and who were the only owners. The family was thrilled to see a young family (we were expecting my first child at the time) move into a place that held so many memories for them, and that was hard to let go of when their parents passed. Many of my friends from childhood are now raising their own families here too. Of course not everybody stays here (both my sisters have ventured to other parts of the city), and not everybody grew up here, but you will certainly find a lot of people like myself. I will forgive my sisters as long as they raise their kids White Sox fans.
I love going for walks and runs and feeling the overwhelming sense of camaraderie this this neighborhood offers. Located 12 miles south of the Loop, the community enjoys architecturally and historically significant housing, quality public and private schools and has many offerings for its residents and Chicagoans alike. I just wish more people knew more about what they can find here.
Here’s a list of our family’s favorite things to do in Beverly:
The Beverly Arts Center, 2407 W. 111th St., Chicago, IL 60655
This fantastic center offers fine arts education, programming and entertainment for all ages. The BAC has classes in art, music, dance, and theater; rotating exhibitions of art by established and emerging artists; and one of the most dynamic performing arts programs in the city.
***NPN members receive a discount to Peter Pan Jr. for all the shows on March 14th and 15th, when using the code NPN. This show is done by kids, for kids and is the perfect family theater experience. For full details and ticket info click here.***
Ridge Run Ridge Park, 9625 S. Longwood Drive - Monday, May 26 2014
2014 marks the 37th Annual Memorial Day run hosted by the Beverly Area Planning Association (BAPA). This 10k and 5k goes through the historic Ridge Historic District and attracts about 4,000 participants. There is also a 1-mile youth run, and a non-competitive “tot trot”. A parade and ceremony immediately follows the race to honor America’s armed services.
BAPA also hosts several annual special events that are great for families and all ages. The Snowflake Ball, Beverly Hills Cycling Classic, Music Under the Stars, History Mystery Bike Ride and Homes Tours are some great ways to check out this neighborhood and see all it has to offer.
