Five Warm Climate Destinations for Toddlers

Written by: Colleen Kelly

Baby it’s cold outside!  Here in wintry Chicago, temperatures are the coldest we’ve seen them in a while.  At our house, we’ve been daydreaming about warm weather, playing outside, and possibly even splashing in the water…doesn’t that sound great? Let’s avoid the cold wind, numb toes, and shoveling our driveways and start planning a warm getaway for the family. Here is Family Travel with Colleen Kelly’s top five warm climate destinations for traveling with a toddler.

1.     Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Beaches and state parks with many outdoor activities – Fishing is a BIG hit here and if your little one can help hold a fishing pole, it might be a fun “first” experience.

Alligator Adventure is a fun spot for families who like reptiles!  There are over 1,000 alligators as well as other reptiles and animals.

Ripley’s Aquarium is one of the most visited attractions in all of South Carolina! Many interactive displays to keep your little one entertained.

Bookgreen Gardens can get overlooked, but it is a beautiful spot to explore and enjoy a nature walk as a family.  Cool sculptures and good photo ops!

2.     San Diego, California

Of course the San Diego Zoo is a huge hit with kids of all ages! You can spend a whole day at the zoo enjoying the many exhibits and interactive demonstrations.

Who doesn’t love Legos? Come check out Legoland! It’s an amusement park for all ages with rides and entertainment! DUPLO Village is perfect for little ones 2-5 years old.

Balboa Park is a must see while in San Diego.  Great place for a picnic lunch and to just run off a little extra energy in a beautiful setting.  There is a Japanese Garden, several playgrounds and even a little train ride.

3.     Caribbean Cruises & Resorts

Warm weather, open seas, and the sun in your face, who doesn’t want that? Many cruise ships offer free kids clubs so parents can have some R&R time on their own.

Some cruise lines have teamed up with your child’s favorite characters such as Disney.

Beaches Family Resorts offer all kinds of fun experiences with Sesame Street characters including character breakfasts, story time with Elmo and nature walks with Grover.

4.     San Antonio, Texas

Sea World has so much fun for everyone in the family.  Little ones will really enjoy all of the interactive animal demonstrations.  There is a water area with a Sesame Street theme that will keep the kids cool on a really hot day.

Morgan’s Wonderland is a fully accessible park for children of all ages and abilities.  Toddlers love the Sensory Village and the Off-Road Adventure ride.

River Walk boat rides are a nice way to relax and check out the diversity of the scenery along the river.  A visit to the Pearl Farmers Market on Saturdays is a nice stop along the route.

5.     Sedona Area, Arizona

Slide Rock State Park is a must for all families.  Be careful with the kids on the natural water chute…they might just want to play at the water’s edge to be safe.

Hiking is a very popular activity in the area and there are routes for all levels.  Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and sunscreen!

Deer Farm is in nearby Williams, AZ.  Little ones love the opportunity to pet and feed animals.

Just keep in mind that travelling with toddlers requires patience and flexibility.  As long as you can go with the flow, you will hopefully have a nice time!  I don’t know about you, but a little warmth will be good enough for me!  Have fun making memories on your next family vacation.
