Sleep Struggles Part 3: Night Owls

Bedtime can be an ordeal even for the most patient parents.  Sleep struggles are a normal part of parenting, but we hope these tips will help your whole family rest a little easier!

To wrap up our Sleep Struggles NPN Blog series, we’d like to share a few tips for making bedtime worry-free: 

  • Make time to wind down. We’re all busy, so we know how tempting it can be to send the kids straight to bed after returning from the day’s activities. However, for most children, this does more harm than good. Scheduling as little as fifteen minutes to wind down with a quiet activity like reading a book will allow your children to ease into bedtime and help them drift off more easily.
  • Use a sound machine. Chances are most of the world is still awake when your child goes to bed. Especially for us city parents, this can mean that outside noises come into the bedroom and keep our children awake. Purchasing a white noise machine will help to muffle outdoor noises and quite your child’s room. As an added bonus, sound machines will also allow you to go about your regular evening activities without having to tiptoe around after bedtime.
  • Stick to a schedule. Consistency is key for bedtime success. It’s easy to slip up and let our children’s bedtimes fluctuate, especially on weekends, but doing so causes more harm than good. To ensure that your children are ready for sleep at their ideal bedtimes, make sure to put them to bed at the same time on weekends as you do on weeknights.
  • Play soothing music. Sometimes, a little soothing music is all your children need to drift peacefully off to sleep.
