Run plus one - Your new Stroller Workout

Written by: Melissa Stone

Staying fit through pregnancy is highly recommended and has many benefits. It also takes major dedication as our bodies change and we are preparing for two.  As my daughter entered the world 10 days late, with fairly easy labor, and can absolutely attribute my smooth labor to being fit.

When I'm asked by other mommies when they should start again, it’s tough to tell because of everyone is so different.  Every woman needs to listen to her healthcare provider and her own body as some women may be ready sooner than others.   I was able to get back to running at 5 weeks.  It was so great to get out there, nice and slow, if even only for a short distance.

Running is a stress release for me and a time for me to appreciate everything my body does for me. However, if you are like me, trying to fit in my own time these days has been tough!  Thankfully I purchased the BOB Stroller and have been able to get out on the Lakefront with my daughter. I have to say, running with a stroller is not the same as running on my own, but like most things these days, it’s the “new normal”.

If you are looking for a personal best in your next race, running with a jogging stroller is not for you.  If you are looking for a full body workout, than running with a stroller is.  It works your core and your arms from pushing forward all of the extra pounds of baby and necessities.  Additionally, running with a stroller forces you into an entirely new running gait where you are leaning forward while using one or both of your arms.

Here are a few tips for running with your infant in a stroller.  PLUS scroll down for great Stroller 5K Training Perks, support, and Giveaway!

#1. Some suggestions to consider when looking at a jogging stroller:

  • Good suspension system that provides smooth ride for the little one.
  • Good padding that helps keep your child comfortably secure.
  • Lightweight
  • Padded handlebar
  • I have the BOB Revolution SE, that I use with the attachment for the car seat and I absolutely love it!

#2. Start slow.  Running while pushing a stroller can immediately raise your heart rate with all of the extra weight.  Go slow, enjoy.

#3. Get out there.  I know just getting out there for a run is tough enough sometimes, and now even more so with the baby and all of the logistics to think about. Go and do it.  You will be happy you did.

#4. Arms.  Instantly you will notice how much your arms are working.  It’s up to you if you want to use one or both arms.  I switch holding the front handle to the sides throughout my run.

#5. Be proud.  It can be intimidating especially if you see lots of fast runners around you. Pat yourself on the back for being out there!  It’s you and your baby - it can’t get much better than that.

#6. Have fun.  Whether you are walking, running, or a little of both - you will work your entire body with the bonus of no sitter required.

#7. New Gait.  Not only will you work your legs, but you will work all of your muscles in a new way.  Expect your run to feel different.

#8. No expectations.  We all have new bodies.  Get out and about with your baby and try to avoid the pressures and expectations of your former body.

#9. Enjoy the view.  It’s the best to be out there and feel active and healthy.  Burn off your stress while you take it all in - the sights, sounds, and fresh air.

#10. It’s an adjustment.  Please remember, it takes some getting used to.  So know that and enjoy.
