Healthy Eating Tips from the Working Moms Group Event!
Written by: Marietta Coles
If your kids are anything like mine, you have all sorts of tricks up your sleeve to get your child to eat a few bites of veggies. In February, Lara Field, a registered dietician and certified specialist in pediatrics, spoke at the Working Moms group luncheon and gave me new hope and much better tools to help our family. Lara shared so many great tips! Below are a few highlights:
- After shopping, cut up fresh vegetables and fruit and put into easily accessible containers so you and your child will have a healthy snack to go to in a pinch. I put Lara’s suggestion into practice this week! It was awesome to pull out fresh veggies to snack on as I was getting dinner ready. It also saved me from the dreaded dinner time battles since we snacked on veggies rather than crackers, pretzels, etc.
- Avoid the kids menus at restaurants and order a more healthier choice off the regular menu. Share your plate with your little ones, or ask for a half size serving for your child. Surprisingly, most restaurants will be happy to do this.
- Eliminate, or reduce snacking. Feed your children more at main course meals, and try to elimate the amount of "snack times" during the day. This will lead to create a healthier eating habit now and for many years to come.
Lara's presentation was great and has already made a positive impact on my family! Attached are two handouts from the presentation - Reading Food Labels and Portion Sizes for kids. In addition, Lara is also offering NPN member 10% off her services! Please see www.feedkids.com for additional information and services that Lara Field provides.
