Help little ones discover their inner bookworm

Written by: Curtis Flagg

Do your kids love reading? Do you wish they would read more? Do you want them to learn to love books? It’s time for a trip to Open Books!

Bring your little ones, bookworms and reluctant readers to our colorful and inviting bookstore to inspire and encourage their love for the written word.

Open Books is a nonprofit bookstore with a special mission to enrich lives through reading, writing and the awesome power of used books. Located in River North, the store has over 50,000 titles for sale.

10,000 of our books are just for kids. We have board books for babies, storybooks for school aged children, those beloved chapter books and series for early readers.  We have something for every child, and our friendly staff will help you find the perfect book. Organized in our colorful kids section, we have a special area for reading and lounging and enjoying a new book.

What makes Open Books even more special is every dollar spent in our store helps support Chicago literacy programs for children and teens.  Open Books is always looking for more books to sell to support our cause.  Shockingly, 61% of low-income families have NO children’s books at home. Open Books gives away 5% of our donated books to our students.  Donating your books is just one more way to support the organization, and very valuable one!

Clean out your bookshelves and teach little ones how to give back.  Consider donating to Open Books.  A great way to teach your kids about giving back to the community.  They can pick out books to donate, bring them to the store, and pick out a new one to enjoy.

Open Books also offers Storytime. Please join us for free read-aloud stories, crafts and drama games. It’s a great way to spend the morning with your family and friends!  The perfect playdate destination.  Check for the schedule and times.

If you are attending the NPN School Fair, please remember to bring your books to donate to Open Books.  Open Books will be there to answer all of your questions about their programs and how to help,  See you Saturday!
