Got 5 minutes? Get in a workout!

Being a relatively new business in North Center, we at Orange Shoe jumped at the opportunity to speak and share some fitness tips with the NPN Moms in Business event last week.  The event was themed around balance, so we addressed how physical activity and exercise can help you achieve balance physically as well as mentally and psychologically.  Also, since we all are busy folks, we offered some quick 5, 10 and 15 minute at-home workouts ideas. So for those parents who missed it, read below for a quick recap!

Got 5 minutes?
Get your blood flowing and hit a little bit of everything: plank, bodyweight squats, jumping jacks, push-ups.  Do each exercise for 30 seconds and move on to the next exercise.  This full-body, circuit-style workout without equipment is the easiest way to get in some exercise no matter where you are.

Got 10 minutes?
Turn it up a notch with intense cardio and a chair: mountain climbers, step-ups, burpees, tricep dips.  Using a chair a) keeps you from having to get on the ground for mountain climbers and burpees and b) gives your workout a vertical component that cranks up the intensity.  

Got 15 minutes?
Take it to the floor to cover all of your extras: side planks, leg lifts, supermans, glute bridges.  While you can actively work on your core strength during any exercise by contracting those muscles, these exercises will target them specifically from every angle.  Sure, crunches are great for building strength in the superficial abdominal muscles, but true "core" strength is located much deeper than your visible abs!!
Have 30 minutes to spare?
Use your exercise time to take the kids to the park, go on a bike ride with your significant other, or meet up with a friend for a walk.

Just remember, every bit helps! Don't think you need to get a full hour in to reap the benefits of exercise. Break your activity up into shorter chunks that you CAN fit into your daily life, no matter how busy you are. Make the time. Schedule an appointment with yourself. Use exercise as your break. Your body AND brain will thank you for it! Even if you think you don't have time, invest a little of it in exercise and the return will be great.
