Workshop Descriptions

Supporting Language and Literacy in the Early Years

This workshop will focus on the language developmental tasks of 2-6 year old. We will explore the activities they engage in as they expand their language, communication and literacy skills. We'll also examine the important and interactive role adults and older children play in supporting the emergence and development of these skills.

The Re-Naturing of Play: Connecting with Nature in an Urban Environment

Research has shown that children who spend time in nature are more creative, less stressed, better able to concentrate, are more physically active, and interact more positively with others. But living in an urban area can make it difficult to find opportunities to connect with nature on a regular basis. In this hands-on workshop, we will examine the barriers that keep us from enjoying time outdoors with our children and explore ways in which we can support daily connections with nature, for both our children and ourselves. Participants will walk away with a solid framework for providing nature play on a regular basis, as well as some simple take-home ideas to get the adventure going!

Early Childhood Nutrition and Picky Eaters

This workshop will focus on nutrition for toddlers and families alike. We will discuss providing healthy choices, how to handle picky eaters and take participant questions. We will also work as a team to prepare some healthy snacks the whole family can enjoy.

Instructors include:

Sharon Syc, Ph.D.
Director of Erikson’s master’s degree program, child life concentration; and codirector of the Irving B. Harris Infant Specialist Certificate Program.
