NPN Kiddos Sound Off: What are you thankful for?

I am endlessly thankful for the Volunteers and Staffers that make NPN THE greatest parenting resource in the City. But I wanted to know what their kiddos were thankful for, so we asked them. Here's what they had to say:

Abby (2):  "Pinecones and Raisins"

Alex (3): "Ice cream"

Evie (6): "That my parents have enough money for food and shelter...and hot dogs"

Leela (7): "I am thankful for family and friends"

Isaac (2):  "Nature Museum" (Peggy Notebaert)

Jett (7): "For ...

As many of you know, Neighborhood Parents Network is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization founded in 1980. Our mission is to connect a diverse community of families with the resources they need to navigate parenting in the city. Give Back, Family-Style!

It’s that time of year again. Your kids are bursting with enthusiasm for the holidays and their wish lists are growing longer by the commercial break. While this season often brings out the selfish side of our children, the timing has never been better for teaching them the importance of selflessness. Fortunately, Chicago families can participate in a variety of kid-friendly volunteer events this year. By helping others, your sometimes greedy little munchkins will learn the significance of...

KID: Keeping your kids safe for 15 years

It is hard to believe that it has been 15 years since KID was founded.  We wanted to share with you, our important partners, the highlights of those 15 years that have a direct impact on your children’s safety.

Fifteen years ago, Danny Keysar, the son of Linda Ginzel & Boaz Keysar, was tragically killed when the recalled crib he was in at his Chicago child care home collapsed, strangling him.  Far from a freak accident, the death was caused both by the dangerous crib design an...

What to Ask in a Nanny Interview

There is a lot to consider when hiring a nanny. Interviewing, screening and selecting potential nanny candidates can be a daunting task, but it is an important part of finding a nanny that is a good fit with your family.

Try to use open-ended questions that will prompt for informative answers, such as questions starting with: What? When? Why? How? Where? Or tell me about… This will avoid getting Yes and No answers.

1.     Experience and Background: Look for a nanny who has experien...

The Case for Play!

I'll be honest. I'm a play advocate. I co-founded Playdate Planet, an online playdate scheduling site, and I write and speak frequently about the importance of play for children. I know that unstructured play for kids has declined drastically in the last two decades. I know that many schools have reduced, or eliminated, recess. I read stuff that depresses me about play, or the lack thereof, all the time. But, recently, I saw a news story that shocked even me. The NY Post reported that rich...

World Prematurity Day: How to Help a Friend with a Baby in the NICU

As we approach World Prematurity Day this Sunday, November 17th, I thought it might be helpful to try and shed some light on ways to assist a friend who is a parent with a baby or babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). In 2011, my husband and I formed the Little Giraffe Foundation to support  parents with babies in the NICU and the babies themselves, after we experienced an extended stay at the NICU ourselves.

Our twin babies were born at 25 weeks and 6 days. We lost our da...
