Holiday Decorating How-To's

Happy November! Now that the Halloween costumes are packed away and all of the good candy's eaten, it's time to turn our excitement to the winter holidays! As a mom to three little girls (5, 3, and 11 months!) I know first-hand how easy it is to get overwhelmed with holiday decorations that are heavy on the construction paper and elmer's glue, light on your style. As amazing as those home-made decorations are, we all need a few corners here and there in our home that reminds us that yes, a...

Helping your late talker to communicate

Many parents ask me why their child is a late talker. Speech-language delays are common because oral communication is a complex process. There are many neurological processes that must occur to say just one word! A child has to get his parent's attention, know the word, find the right word in her brain, send the word from his brain to his mouth and coordinate movements of her mouth to form the word.  Sometimes, the reasons for these difficulties are obvious. Other times, it is unclear why...

Safe Sleep: Crib Safety Information Every Parent Needs to Know

We all know how vital sleep is to our children (and to adults!) but we want to make sure that our children have a safe sleep. What is a safe sleep environment? It is an environment where the crib, bassinet or play yard meets CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) and ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standards. It means that nothing else is in the crib other than a tightly fitted mattress sheet and a baby placed on his or her back. Check out all our tips for a safe sleep...

The countdown to Thanksgiving dinner is officially on!  At Centered Chef, we want our clients to know that it is possible to make food that is both healthy and delicious. Our challenge is to create solutions (for Thanksgiving and every other day) that satisfy while remaining healthy.

We've created a Thanksgiving...

When Your Child Resists Toilet Training

I sometimes work with families where the child is three, four or five years old and does not want to use the toilet, especially for bowel movements.

What can parents do?  First, try to take the pressure off and make sitting on the toilet fun.  Have your child sit (when you think he might need to go) and read him, or her, a story.  It can be about a child learning to use the toilet, or any fun story would do.  After a week, ask your child (while he is sitting on the toilet) to tr...

How one dad dances the balance of work & family

I can't say that I am the best lawyer, or the best business man, but I can say that I am extremely skilled at dancing the balance of work and family.  Skilled because i am equipped to make this balancing act work - my wife and I decided way back when that we wanted to be there for our kids while they still wanted us to be there.  We didn't want to go the "day-care" route, wanted to (needed to!)  be there for every moment, be there when they come leave for school, when they come home at the...

Letters to Heaven-How to help children mourn & cope with loss

Grief and Loss is a complicated process and having the appropriate outlet and language, especially for children is keen in helping them work through their feelings and questions. My time as a therapist, both during internship and currently in my practice I have come to recognize the importance of helping children and providing the space for them to grieve the loss of a family member, friend, and family pets.

Letters to heaven is a great way to allow your child to have a sense of closur...
