Like many moms-to-be running a small business, as the big date approaches, you may start to wonder: what to do about maternity leave? When you don't have an employer paying for time off and providing work coverage, it can be overwhelming. Baby 1, Meet Baby 2: A How-To Guide on a Proper Introduction

New baby in the house? How is that going for your “old” baby? Having a new sibling can create feelings of insecurity and even loss for an older sibling. How can parents get a sibling relationship off to a healthy start and best prepare for the transition?

Some ideas:

Finding the right school for your special-needs child

Trying to identify the school that is best able to help your child with special needs to learn and thrive is much like other aspects of parenting your child: it takes patience and legwork…and lots of advocacy.

#1. The first step will be determining, as well as you can, what environment is best for your child. Your child’s service providers can help you.

What kind of environment does your child need: Is a well-structured classroom with clear routines important? Does your child h...

Preschool in Chicago: Why I'm saying 'Forget it'

I’ve just missed the first round of preschool open houses in Hyde Park. I have a daughter, S, whose peers have all been introduced around: to preschool teachers, administrators, and their soon-to-be-classmates. In Hyde Park, where kids start school as early as 2, this is the plight of a 9-month-old. They can’t talk, most don’t walk. In fact, the majority of these babies (BABIES!) are still pretty drooly, crawling about, floppily waving bye-bye when no one’s leaving the room. But in a litt...

Juggling Act: Balancing My Life With Special Needs Kids

We went to the Midnight Circus last summer, my kids watched an extremely talented juggler in amazement! The act started as one would expect, with a couple of balls and a few tricks. It became much more exciting when his assistant joined in and started throwing more balls and random objects into his act. Soon he was juggling what seemed to be an impossible number of things. It lasted for just a moment, though it seemed much longer. The whole audience stood with bated breath—all waiting to s...

Birthday Party Etiquette

Here are what I consider the 5 rules of birthday party etiquette to get you and your guests on the same page.  Find your happy place, where you can plan and enjoy a fastastic celebration of your little one's big day.
