#1 Lesson I learned as a new parent

Recently, I asked the NPN Board of Directors, what is the #1 lesson you learned as a new parent.  Here is some great advice as you navigate the day-to-day ups and downs of parenting:

“A hug can deflect a lot of frustration.” -Elisa

“While the minutes may drag forever, the months fly by. Try your best to stay present through the sleeplessness and frustration. It all passes quickly.” -Kelley

“With twins, the first three years were very challenging, having two babies’ needs to mee...

New to Parenting? Form A Must-Have Network of Support

Not too long ago (22 months to be exact) I was a brand new mommy and wondering how in the world was I supposed to give my baby the very best attention while dealing with a sea of change and an ocean of hormones. Also, how was I supposed to accomplish simple tasks–like taking a shower and perhaps shaving every once and a while? Or getting used to the idea that my new bundle was also now my bathroom buddy. 22 months later Ty is a little maniac, and still wants to go wherever I go.

So, ho...

Brizard's CPS Listening Tour with NPN

Last week, eleven NPN volunteers, partners and staff members had the amazing opportunity to meet with the new CEO of the Chicago Public Schools, Jean-Claude Brizard, as part of his Listening Tour initiative. These small forums with Mr. Brizard give key education stakeholders (including teachers, principals, students, parents, community and faith leaders) a chance to share their thoughts on what is and is not working in CPS.  NPN’s meeting with Mr. Brizard brought together parents represent...

Getting Outside: Urban Tyke Hike

With playgrounds, parks, museums and libraries at our fingertips, we city dwellers are lucky that we don’t have to travel far to enjoy engaging activities with our kids.

But what about when you have only 30 minutes, you’re not motivated to load everyone in the car, or you want your little ones to burn off some energy before naptime? Consider an urban hike, beginning right outside your door.

Almost immediately after learning to walk, our son began asking to “walk on feet.” I love th...

Please, No Capris! Fashion Tips from the Lakeview Group Mom's Night Out

Every day I open my closet to find…tons of clothes but nothing to wear. Whatever the day calls for, a play date in the park or an evening concert with my husband, I feel lacking in the fashion department.  After wearing maternity clothes for the better part of year and now wearing a uniform of t-shirt/jeans most days at home with my daughter, “fashion” has fallen to the wayside.

Needless to say I was thrilled when fashion consultant, Noelle Cellini, spoke out the NPN Lakeview Club’s Ju...
