The Amazing Generation by Jonathan Haidt and Catherine Price

  • A book review by middle schooler, Seraphina R

This book is about how being on your device is not good and there are many ways to fix that. It is written for any young person with a device that they use every day, especially teens and tweens.

·       Did you know that if you turn your screen to black and white you are less likely to want to use your device?

·       Did you know that you need two screen-free hours before bed so your body can recharge, and you feel less tired in the morning?

·       Did you know that if you take a photo of a memory, you are less likely to remember it the next day than if you actually just experienced it and enjoyed the fun?

·       Did you know that everything is not what it seems online?

Want to learn more fun facts, be entertained, and keep yourself tech healthy? Then you need to check out this publication!

The aim of this book is to help children manage tech use and understand why being on devices constantly is bad for everyone. For older kids there are new things to learn. For younger kids, who often have watches or iPads, this is a good book to look at with an adult. You can either read it all the way through or just scan it and pick what looks interesting.

It is laid out in an easy-to-read format. It is a chapter book with sections like: Free Apps Can Cost A Lot, The Tech Wizards Are Rewiring Your Brain, and Your Future Is In Your Hands. There is a lot to learn and discuss. It makes for great family dinner conversations!

It also has many graphics mixed in with the text. These visuals include short tips, advice from kids like us, and case studies of people who have experience to share. There are also great short comics throughout. It is an easy read!

I think this should be a must-read for all middle school students because it really gets you thinking. Even if it was not on the reading list, you would still want to get a copy. - Just ask my younger sister who keeps taking mine!
