"Being a stay-at-home parent is extremely rewarding, but it can also be extremely isolating. When I quit my job to stay at home, we had also just moved to Chicago, a new city where I had no network. As I looked for playgroups and friends in similar situations, I found that stay-at-home parenting is (very understandably) largely the purview of mothers. In some places I met resistance to my presence -- sometimes moms want a space where they can talk about things like recovering from pregnancy, or their relationships with their husbands, and it can get awkward when I'm there. When I did succeed in making some very good friends, I still felt that I was surrounding myself with a community of women.
NPN was just the support network that I needed for balance in my life. It gave me a large community of active parents of all types, and it also gave me a specific community of active dads that I could relate to.
I rely on NPN all the time, both for the larger network and for the network within the network. It's a great place to get questions answered, and for events to enjoy. But, more than that, it's a great place to get involved, to get active, to commit to something. I would be at a loss without it."
