Developmental Differences

Our 6th annual fair is dedicated to providing Chicago families with school options, service providers and other resources that focus on serving parents of children with developmental differences.

Designed for families with children ages infant through 8th grade. RSVP below to expedite your check-in process.

Categories of needs include, but are not limited to developmental delays (i.e., speech, motor skills), sensory processing disorder, autism, ADD/ADHD, PDD-NOS, mixed receptive-expressive language disorder, Down Syndrome, and physical disabilities.

Note: We recommend, where possible, to make this an adult-only event. This convention style event and workshops are not ideal for children. See our list of exhibitors (updated weekly) and more information for parents here.

Attendees can sign up for workshops at the check-in desk upon arrival:

11:00 - 11:45 Advocating for Therapy

This panel will answer some common questions about therapy. They will discuss how school-based services (including Early Intervention, occupational therapy and speech therapy) differ from outpatient (private) services. This workshop will cover some aspects of ABA therapy including details about ABA testing and insurance coverage. Parents will also learn about the roles of different types of assessment in planning/facilitating treatment for children and the difference between school and out patient testing.

Experts providing this workshop are Dr. Nucha Isarowong of Erikson Institute, Katie Null from Autism Home Support Services, and Dr. April Carbone.

12:00 - 12:45 Advocating in CPS

A panel of CPS parents of children who each have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) will discuss how they worked to secure the best education and care possible through Chicago Public Schools. Experiences include but are not limited to advocating for school assignment, transitioning from early intervention to an IEP, successfully advancing from one grade to the next, and more. Connect with and learn from parents who have navigated a similar path and leave with insight and information to help you manage your child’s educational experience.

1:00 - 1:45 Advocating Beyond Traditional Therapies

Experts offer resources that are available to families beyond that of basic therapies. They will discuss recreational programming as available through the special recreation programs at the Chicago Park District. This workshop will cover tools and strategies for parents seeking to understand, help, and advocate for their bright but struggling students. Parents will also learn about PediaSource, a company that connects parents with experts in child behavior, development, and learning on the phone for 15 minutes (or more) at a time.

Experts providing this workshop are Heather Bragg of Learning Decoded, Kristi Miller of the Chicago Park District, and Hema Trukenbrod of Pediasource.
