Baby Crying & Sleep

How do parents go about establishing sleep routines with their baby?  Parents get a lot of strong and conflicting advice, and yet each infant and family is unique.  There is no research that shows one way of handling sleep is better than another as long as babies are sleeping in a safe space.  We do know, however, that parenting styles affect sleep: Babies who are carried, held and fed continuously cry less as infants and wake more after 3 months, while babies who are more “routine based” ...

A New Role in a New Year: Team Danny Did

Between balancing work, family and other activities, time to read "parenting how-to" books is sometimes limited.  But the advice, ideas, and suggestions I've received from NPN discussion forums on everything from potty-training, bedtime issues and doctor recommendations are invaluable and easy to access!

What to do when your child has a tantrum in public

A nightmare scenario for many of us parents is when our child loses it at the store, in a restaurant, at the park. Your child starts screaming or worse yet, starts throwing things, and you worry that strangers are thinking what a terrible parent you must be! What do you do now?

First, remember that most parents have experienced something like this, and unless you become overly aggressive with your child, most parents will not be angry with you but empathize with you. For tantrums ...

My daughter is two, but I can still vividly remember being up at 4 a.m. for a feeding, starving and exhausted. I remember opening the refrigerator with one hand, the baby in the other, trying to figure out what I could eat that was actuall...

Fun Winter Activities

The weather is cold! Here's a fun list of winter activites to try at home:

Kindergarten

Activity: BANG!

Place words/colors/letters (any concept you are working on) on index cards and then into a bag. Also include a few cards with a picture of a stick of dynamite and the word “BANG!” written on it. Have your child reach into the bag and pull out a card. He names what is on the card and keeps it. Then you do the same. Take turns back and forth. When the word “BANG!” is pull...
